Termites are swarming in my bedroom.
What should I do? I've vacuumed them up and there are thousands of them and wings everywhere. It's a rental and I've only been here a week.
You are doing the right thing by vacuuming them up.
Next you need to know whether they have come in from outside or if they are emerging fromsomewhere within the building. If outsiders, keeping your bright lights off and widows shut for the next few evenings should see you through. If they come from within the building, then you need to know how bad the damage really is.
Assessing the situation depends on the type of termite and how long they've been around as well as things like where you are.
assuming that the building IS infested, then If your landlord (and owner) won't act, I'd look at moving out in the longer term because of risks like structural failure in high winds or earth tremors. You might ask a termite company to come and give a free quote that you can give to the landlord. That is often enough to get things moving. Keep a few termites as samples (in a bag in the freezer or in 70 % alcohol) just in case you need to get tehm identified.
It's a seasonal reproductive thing - late summer to Fall and then again in late Spring. You should only get it a few times and probably not so badly, but don't just forget about it
